The chip is a sensor that helps the printer to recognize the cartridge and the ink level.

For NO-CHIP ink cartridges, customers have to replace the chips from the OEM original ink cartridges (genuine) ink cartridges to our new replacement ink cartridges, and we have instruction inside of the box, you can follow the instruction to replace the chip.

For WITH-CHIP ink cartridges, you can install them as easy as install the OEM ones.

Personally, we would recommend you purchasing those ink cartridges with chips, since they will save you from unnecessary efforts and potential trouble.

I have a Canon Pixma MP640 primarily used to print photos. Does the compatible ink you use the have the same formulation as the OEM version and does it have the same durability? Among our various models of ink cartridges,there are one serie called Cli-8(BK/C/M/Y) and PGI-5BK,and also few toner cartridge.These products have two options: With or Without Chip.

Regularly,most printers install the chips inside ,several printers put the chips together with the cartridges.

Thus,if you buy the cartridges "With Chip",then you have nothing to worry;If you buy the cartridges "Without Chip",then you need to take the chip off the old cartridge,and put it on the new one.
